As I was torn between distress, anger and frustration, finally, I could only think of a prayer. For forgiveness.

We have let our indulgences – of the mind and the body – overpower the natural, instinctive intelligence that all life has. We dismiss the idea that living simply is to live harmoniously. We have overlooked the richness that Nature can fill us with. We have deluded ourselves with seeking the Almighty without a connection with the living, breathing world. We have thrown to the winds the wisdom of several traditional ways of living that showed us why the collective is more important than the individual. We have lost respect for the sacredness of life.

Making me question the very basis of the claim that human beings are intelligent beings. Because, if indeed we were intelligent, surely, we could not be missing the reprimand that Nature is giving us now. We would allow ourselves to feel the connection with other sentient beings. We would not allow the market induced paradigms override what out hearts will know to be right. We would not be blind to the moments and glimpses of truth, afforded in these months of isolation, as to see what is most essential for life. We would not be restlessly waiting for a return to the normal we knew, not recognizing that to be the path to more destruction.

So, I have decided to ask for forgiveness. For our ignorance. For our arrogance. In trepidation. For the remarkable misdeeds of our species. For the childhoods we have scarred. From the rivers that we will defile more. From the forests that we are on course to destroy. From the animals and ecosystems that we will destroy on this planet that is home to all. From the air that we poison. From the unborn children whose world will be poorer for our actions.

And with a faint glimmer of hope, that we will redeem ourselves once more with that forgiveness.

Fourteen year old Devika set herself ablaze in Kerala. The reports are that she went to this step because she could not access her digital classes. It is that time of the year when we are usually inundated with tragic stories of young lives cut short. Reasons could range from failures in school leaving exams to the stress of fiercely competitive exams or simply being unable to cope in colleges. The virus may have lulled us into ignoring this problem, but Devika paid with her life to bring us out of this stupor.

Predictably, there are many angles being debated around Devika’s death – the effect of the lock down on education, the need to ensure digital access and the kinds of models of digital education that have to be made. Social inequity gets one more new peg, called the digital divide. Depending on your co-ordinates and leanings, you will place yourself in the spectrum of these discussions.

But the issue that gets forgotten here is – how did we get to this point where the process of education has become a game of such high stakes? Has education failed in its primary objective – of preparing the young people for a life in harmony with themselves and the world around?

As an adult concerned with children, I cannot but notice how fragile and vulnerable our children are. Years ago, I was assisting the admission process in the school I was working in, when I stepped out of a family interview to attend to the child who was getting disturbed; I remember watching in shock the little girl’s trembling hands, she was nervous about getting admitted to Class 1. I knew sadly that this was not the first time she was going to tremble. Caught in the crossfire between parental expectations and peer pressures, children have no time to grow up. With childhoods on fast forward, they are propelled to master more and in lesser time. We have managed to create such ambient conditions that children get into this mode of performance almost as if on default. For the privileged among us, we take our children’s move into this mode as an automatic, self-evident truth, almost one of virtuosity. For the less privileged, this is an aspirational movement, the one that sadly pushed Devika to her decision.

The lock down and the ensuing pause presented us an opportunity to look at what learning should be and what role the adult could play. Instead, we have moved in very quickly to fill the expository spaces we occupied in their learning paths, with virtual replacements of ourselves. An unspoken assumption here is that children will have to be be programmed into structured environments for them to learn; and from adults, with content that we will pre-determine. We seem to have lost sight of the objective of school education, namely to build abilities in children to learn.

There may be another reason for this too. Maybe we are afraid of letting our children have the time to grow up. If we allow them to find their own mind and develop their own ideas, perhaps they will contest the paradigms we have built. If we include knowing oneself as part of the “multi-dimensional” experiences we want our children to have, perhaps they will hold a mirror to us for us to reflect and grow. If we allow them to develop without our conditioned impulses, perhaps they may find more authentic solutions to the challenges of alienation that are surrounding us.

These are uncomfortable questions. It is easier to respond with more digital infrastructure. But it is time we looked at this question. For the sake of our children, and the future we have borrowed from them, we should reflect – individually and collectively – on our parenting, teaching, paradigms of child rearing. As a young student asked, “Why are you adults so afraid of letting us be?”

” Understanding Learning Outcomes is online course. This course started on May 28^th. In 1^st webinar they gave one question every participate must give answer, with one word answer. In the next webinar they discussed. First time like this online course I participated. It was very interesting and very exciting. In this course 10 days, 20 hours, 20 participants, 3 facilitators, 18 course outcomes, 10 webinars, 8 quizzes, 2 assignments. Day 1 to day 10 I attended all the classes. When course started, there was internet problem and connecting was little difficult. Then I connected my mobile phone it was very nice. Every day I attended webinars, quiz and assignments. In this course I understood all topics but few topics like case studies 4 and 5 and assessment were difficult.

In this course I learnt so much each and every activities they presented very well with their expression and examples. They sent good materials for reading. In this course time I read good materials and before doing thinking is more important. In this course every one collaboratively worked and completed every activity. Important of team work I learnt. All this activities we are doing at our Sanctuary school but this is a kind of method I learnt in this course. Learning learning outcome and student centric work are some things we are doing past few years including planning and making / doing with children. For this course must reading books, good materials, good planning and more ideas we can make and apply at school curriculum.”

Ademma, reflecting on what she understood of the book, how it relates to our schools and our lives today and also shares what she thinks education/ teaching should be. (Excerpt from the last chapter).

• గీజు బాయి అంటున్నాడు ముందు ప్రపంచ స్వారుపం ఇలా ఉండేది కాదు, ఇంగ్లీసు వారు మన దేశంలో కొత్త కొత్త ప్రయోగాలు చేశారు, ఇంకా మనుసులు కూడ మన దేశన్ని నాశనం చేస్తున్నారు.
• ఆయన చెప్పినట్టే నిజంగా మనుసులు ప్రాపంచాన్ని మార్చినారు ఎలా అనగా ముందు అయితె నీల్లు బూమి పైబాగన్న ఉండేది చెరువులు,కుంటలు, బావూలు నిండుగా నీల్లు ఉండేవి ఎక్కడ చూసిన నీల్లు పోతూండేది.
• అడవిలో కూడ నీలు ఎక్కడ చూసిన ఉండేవి, ఏటిలో కూడ నీల్లు పోతూండేది, అప్పుడు జీవరాసులు, పాక్షిలు నీల్లుతాగుతు ఎక్కువగా ఉండేది. ఇప్పుడు అయితే జీవరాసులు అంతగా కనిపించేది కాదు,
• అడవిలొ నీల్లు లేవు మనుసులు బోర్లు వేయడం వలన నీల్లు అన్ని అందులోకి వెల్లిపోయాయి, బావులు,చెరువులు, ఎండిపోయాయి, మనుసులు అడవిలోని చెట్లను నరకి ఇండ్లకోసం ఇంక రక రకల పనిముట్లకోసం ఉపయోగిస్తున్నారు, అందువలన వర్సలు తగ్గీపోయయి.
• సెల్ పోన్ టవర్స్ పెద్ద పెద్ద ప్యాక్టిరిలు కట్టాడం వలన అందులోని పొగ ఆకశంలోకి పోతుంది పక్షిలకు ఆని కలుగడం వలన చాలపక్షిలు చనిపోయయి.
• అప్పుడు పంటలు చేసెటప్పుడు పంటలకు ఎరువులు చల్లేవారు, ప్రజలకు రోగాలు అంతగా ఉండేది కాదు, ఇంకాఆ పంటలను తినటానికి పురుగులు,ఎలుకలు వచేవి వాటిని తినటానికి పక్షిలు, పాములు వఛెవి, వాటిని తినటానికి డేగలు,గ్రద్దలు వచేవి ఇలా ఒకదాని మీద ఒకటి ఆదరపడి జీవించేవి.
• ఇప్పుడు పంటలకు రక రకల మందులు చెల్లడం వలన మనుసులకు రోగాలు వస్తున్నాయి పక్షీలు కీటకాలు తగ్గి పోయాయి.
• గీజుబాయి చెప్పినట్టె మనం కూడ పిల్లలకు ఎదైన కొత్తవిశం చెప్పాలి. మనం బ్యెంగులూరు మ్వూజియంకు వెల్లినాము అలాగే పిల్లలను ఇంకా కొత్త చోటికి తీసుకోని వెల్తె వాలు ఆనందంగా చూస్తరు, కాని కరోన రావడం వలన మనము ఎక్కడకు వెల్లలేము, కరోన ఎక్కడ లేకుండా దేశంలో నుండి వెల్లిపోతే మనం పోవఛు.
• గీజుబాయి పిల్లలకు స్వేఛ అనురాగంతో వాల్లను కొట్టకుండ తిట్టకుండ నేర్పడు మనం కూడపిల్లలకు అలానే నేర్పెంచాలి.
• కేవలం డబ్బు కోసం మాత్రం చదువు చెప్పడంకా కాదు దానికి తగ్గట్తు పలితం కూడ ఉండాలి.

Teacher class lo భొదించే ముందు తాను స్యయంగా ఆచరించి దాని ఫలితం చూచి తరువాత భొదించాలి. తరగతిలొ పిల్లలందరు ఒకే విధంగా వుండరు. ఒకోక్కరి ఆసక్తి, ఆలోచనా విధానం ఒకోక్క విదంగా వుంటుంది. teacher మొదట పిల్లలందరి మనొ భావాలను తెలుసుకోవాలి. మొదట వారితో బాగా మాట్లాడించాలి. వారికి టీచర్ బాగా దగ్గరవ్వలి. పాఠశాల అన్న క్లాసులు అన్నా పిల్లల్లొ భయం పోగొట్టాలి. పిల్లలు ఇష్టంగా పాఠశాలకు రావడానికి అవసరమైన విధంగా టీచర్ వుండాలి.పిల్లల ఇష్టాన్ని గుర్తించి classlo teacher plan చేసుకోవాలి. పరిశుభ్రత గురించి రోజు పిల్లలకి చెప్పాలి .పిల్లల్లొ ఆలోచించే శక్తిని పెంపోందించాలి. రోజు చెపిందె చేప్పి బోర్ కొటించకుండ రోజు ఒక ఆసక్తికర కొత్త కొత్త విషయలు భోదించాలి .పిల్లలకి కథలు చెప్పి కథలొని సన్నివేశాలు ఆలోచించే విధంగా వుండాలి .పిల్లల్లే సోంతంగా కథలు చదివే విధంగా ప్రోత్సహించాలి. అప్పుడప్పుడు పాఠశాల యందు తల్లిదండ్రుల సమావేశం పెట్టి టీచర్ భోదనా విదానం గురించి పరిశుభ్రత గురించి వారికి అర్థమయ్య విదంగా చెప్పాలి. పిల్లలకి ముఖ్యంగా గ్రంధాలయం వుండాలి

ప్రతిరోజు క్లాసులో జరిగే కార్యక్రమాల గురించి టీచర్ డైరీలో వ్రాసుకుంటే బాగుంటుంది. డైరీవల్ల ఉపయోగం చాల వుంది. దీనివల్ల టీచర్ ముందు ఎమి చేప్పినాము ,ఇంక ఏమి చేప్పాలి అనేది తెలుస్తుంది. వ్రాయడంలొ తప్పు ఒప్పులు ,పాస్ పెయిలు చెప్పకుడదు.ఎవరి తప్పులను ఎంచకుడదు. మన అనే భావన పిల్లల్లో కలిగించాలి. ప్రతి పిల్లవాడు వినేవిదంగా చూడాలి .పిల్లల్ని కొట్టి తిట్టి చదువు చెప్పకుడదు. పిల్లవానికి ఎంత చెప్పిన జ్ఝాపకం వుండదు అనేది తప్పు ,చదువులో జ్నాపకం లేకపోయిన ఇతర విషయాలలో అతడు చురుక్క వుంటాడు. పిల్లలు ఒక క్రమ పద్దతిని పాటించే విదంగా ఉండాలి. పిల్లలకి పెద్ద పెద్ద ఉపన్యాసాలు గ్రందాలు తెలియని విషయాలు చేప్పకూడదు, మంచి మంచి నాయకులు, ఆదర్స జీవిత చరిత్రలు చెప్పవచును. ఉదా;మదర్ తేరీసా ,వివేకానంద, అర్దవంతమైన కథలు చేప్పి ప్రశ్నోత్తర రూపంలో ఉ‌ండేవిదంగా చూడాలి.
